In industrial environments, fall hazards are one of the most common causes of workplace accidents. According to the Health and Safety Executive, fall-related incidents were responsible for a significant number of workplace accidents in 2024/25, resulting in 124 fatalities in the UK.

The Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV) is the German statutory accident insurance institution that works to prevent and insure against occupational accidents and work-related illnesses. Their approach, with clear guidelines and practical support, serves as a valuable example. For us, it is an important source of insight! We are happy to translate these insights into concrete solutions for safe grating and stair treads, and share other useful tips in this article as well.

Preventing falls

Risk assessment and evaluation

By systematically identifying fall risks in the workplace, targeted measures can be taken before accidents occur. We are happy to assist in drawing up a risk assessment (RA) form specifically for gratings and stair treads.

Collective protective measures

Physical barriers such as guardrails, fencing, and coverings for openings offer collective safety. These measures protect all employees and are often more effective than individual protective equipment.

Personal protective equipment

Sometimes individual solutions are unavoidable. In those cases, employees must be equipped with PPE such as safety harnesses and fall arrest systems. Proper training in their use is essential.

Training and Awareness

Safety awareness increases through hands-on instruction. Think of on-site workshops that demonstrate the correct use of ladders, scaffolding, and gratings, where staff can practise using these products.

Order and Tidiness

In addition to various measures and extra equipment, preventing a fall incident can also be simpler. A tidy workplace, for instance, reduces the risk of tripping and slipping. Ensuring clear walkways and promptly removing obstacles can also help.

Ready for the Right Installation

Precision, technical knowledge and attention to detail are essential for the long-lasting, safe, and cost-efficient installation of gratings and stair treads. Avoid these seven common mistakes and enjoy optimal performance for years to come.
