When designing, engineering, manufacturing and installing metal gratings or stair treads, small details can have major consequences. A poor choice or careless installation often leads to additional costs, safety risks, and reduced durability. In this knowledge article, we outline the seven most common mistakes — and how to avoid them from the start.

Most common mistakes

1. Choosing the wrong material

Don’t automatically opt for standard steel in aggressive or damp environments — it will inevitably lead to rust and rapid wear. Stainless steel or Duplex is a far better choice for corrosion protection in such conditions.
TIP: Always ask about chemical exposure and take environmental factors like salt deposits into account.

2. Incorrect load calculation

If you only consider pedestrian loads and ignore dynamic loads from emergency services or rolling equipment, you risk deformation or even hazardous situations.
TIP: Have a structural calculation carried out early in the process in accordance with the Eurocode, and document all assumptions.

3. Inaccurate dimensions

A grating or tread that doesn’t fit perfectly slows down installation and can cause instability later on. On-site measuring is always an option.
TIP: Use a standard checklist covering all critical dimensions before placing an order.

4. Incorrect mesh size and anti-slip class

Excessively large openings pose a risk of entrapment and falling, while an unsuitable anti-slip class (e.g. R10 vs. R12) does not guarantee sufficient grip in wet or industrial conditions.
TIP: Consult NEN-EN 13236 for openings and NEN-EN ISO 20344 for the correct anti-slip class.

5. Neglecting installation guidelines

Even the best grating will perform poorly if you ignore the installation instructions, do not support the bearing bars on both sides or use the wrong fasteners.
TIP: Plan an installation check on the work floor and organise a final inspection round.

6. No attention to maintenance

When gratings and steps are installed once and then forgotten, rust and wear quickly creep in; a simple maintenance plan prevents unnecessary replacements.
TIP: Record all inspections and cleaning rounds in a logbook or spreadsheet.

7. Aesthetics over functionality

A sleek design that does not meet load-bearing or anti-slip requirements is more likely to cause problems than a well-thought-out, functional design.
TIP: Create 3D visualisations to test the design and functionality in advance.

Ready for the right installation

Accuracy, technical knowledge and attention to detail are essential for the sustainable, safe and cost-efficient installation of gratings and stair treads. Avoid these seven mistakes and enjoy years of optimal performance.
