Safe internal infrastructure starts with inspection - Quick Scan

Why regular inspection of stairs, platforms, and walkways is extremely important

During visits to production and industrial environments, we often see the same issues: a staircase with loosened treads, a platform with early signs of corrosion, or a walkway with a loose handrail. Parts of the internal infrastructure that are used daily, yet rarely checked consciously. And that’s where the risk lies.

The condition of gratings, stairs, handrails, platforms, and drainage covers has a direct impact on workplace safety. Apart from the risk of falls or injuries, defects can also affect compliance with regulations such as the European standards for access systems.

Quick Scan

Quick scan as a preparation step

Staco helps companies prepare for inspections — specifically those involving walkable workplace facilities. By carrying out a Quick Scan and assisting in reviewing on-site conditions, analysing maintenance logs, and identifying points of attention, we enable the (external) inspector to perform a more efficient and effective assessment.

What does the Quick Scan focus on?

Our Quick Scan examines the technical condition and safety of metal structures such as gratings, stairs, platforms, walkways, and handrails. We assess:

  • Existing damage, wear, and/or corrosion
  • Welds and fastenings
  • Anti-slip quality and accessibility
  • Signs of deflection, subsidence, or deformation
  • Maintenance and cleanliness
  • Correct grating dimensions around openings or objects
  • Sufficient support on the substructure

It’s not only about compliance with standards — the key question is whether the structures are truly safe in practice. Often, small signs point to bigger issues ahead: worn stair treads losing grip, weakened handrails, or loose fixings.

How the Quick Scan works

We start by reviewing floor plans, maintenance records, and photos, and by discussing relevant regulations (where applicable). We then assess the walkable metal facilities — on site if required — and provide advice on key areas of concern.

Afterwards, you receive a clear report summarising the observations, photographic evidence, a checklist, and any recommendations. This allows you to immediately determine which repairs are urgent and which adjustments can be incorporated into your maintenance plan. In this way, you are well prepared for the official inspection.

Regulations relevant to official inspection

Our Quick Scan takes into account the key laws and standards, including:

  • The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 Act and the risk assessment (RI&E) requirements;
  • The NEN-EN 14122 series — safety rules for permanent means of access to machinery;
  • Standards for portable climbing equipment, such as EN 131;
  • The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC for machine-related access;
  • EN 1090-1 for CE marking of load-bearing steel structures.

This ensures that your inspection and follow-up are not only technically sound but also fully compliant with legal requirements.

Why work with Staco?

As a manufacturer of metal gratings, stair treads, and access systems, we not only know the products but also the standards they must meet. We help you focus on the right points of attention and advise on materials and finishes that prevent future defects — such as enhanced anti-slip surfaces or corrosion-resistant coatings.

A small preparation,
a big difference

How often do you take the same staircase to the production hall without thinking about whether it’s still safe? A Quick Scan gives you insight and peace of mind — a small effort that makes a big difference.
