Sustainability progress at Staco – What changed and why

Staco’s sustainability ambition has entered a new stage. The company is now in the Champion phase, meaning it aims to lead by example within its industry, not just improve its own performance.

To support this leadership role, Staco defined three strategic sustainability assignments focused on long-term impact, innovation, and sector responsibility.

A strong foundation in circular thinking

Staco continues to build on its Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver foundation, achieved with guidance from EPEA. This structured Staco’s work around material health, water stewardship, energy management, social fairness, and material reutilization. These themes remain embedded in product development and operations, even as Staco discontinues with the official Cradle to Cradle certification process. Staco did not stop its roadmap — it expanded how progress is evaluated.

Why the Assessment Approach Evolved

As Staco’s sustainability scope grew beyond product-level circularity toward company-wide impact, supply chain responsibility, and governance, a broader framework became necessary. This led Staco to adopt the VCDO trajectory, with Voka as assessor and knowledge partner.

The VCDO (Voka Charter Sustainable Entrepreneurship) is an annual guidance program that helps companies integrate sustainability into their core strategy based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

What the VCDO adds

The VCDO framework provides:

  • A structured, tailor-made action plan (People, Planet, Profit)
  • SDGs as a globally recognized reference
  • Annual coaching by sustainability experts
  • Knowledge exchange with other companies
  • Independent evaluation of impact and business integration
  • A yearly certification after positive validation

Companies can progress from the basic charter toward SDG Pioneer, Champion, and Ambassador levels — aligning with Staco’s Champion ambition.

Not a Step Back — A Step Broader

The shift means broader sustainability coverage, stronger links to global goals, continuous annual improvement, and deeper integration into business strategy. By combining its Cradle to Cradle expertise with the VCDO trajectory, Staco strengthens its ability to reduce environmental impact, improve social responsibility, innovate, and act as a sector role model.

Sustainability at Staco is not a label — it is a continuous improvement journey.
