Full gratings for "De Waalse Krook"

A striking building called 'Waalse Krook' is springing up in the centre of Ghent. This project involves an infrastructure (three buildings: the Library, the Winter Circus and a residential complex, public squares, a quayside promenade with a green area, and walking/cycling bridges) for organisations whose aim is to provide services and carry out research in relation to information technology and media.

Architects from the architectural consultancy Coussée & Goris and their partners RCR Arquitectès took charge of the design of the 'Krook'. In that design a prominent place was reserved for steel full gratings type RK that were produced and supplied by Staco Belgium. These were mainly designed as awnings above the windows on 5 floors which, apart from the visual aspect, were also to serve as platforms for window cleaners. Metaalconstructies Verlooy in Mol was Staco Belgium's direct client in this project.

The task mainly consisted of around 2,000 square meters of galvanised full gratings type RK 2/40 with mesh width 88 x 44 mm - with slots in the edge to facilitate the interconnection. The gratings are produced lengthways meaning that the grating bars provide visual uniformity. In addition, these gratings are coated in a modified rust colour that has been specially formulated for this project.
