A few years ago, the bus station in Mönchengladbach was redesigned in a new architectural style, which features panelled gratings provided by Staco Deutschland.
Staco used the close proximity to its company headquarters to convince the architects and investors of the numerous industrial and aesthetic benefits of grating technology.
Staco Deutschland accepted the lengthy assignment to redesign today’s Europaplatz, which has a dual function as a forecourt for the main railway station and a central node for pedestrian and motorised traffic within the city. The MöBus Customer Center operated by the public transport association in the Rhine-Ruhr region is located at the heart of the bus station and its 13 platforms. This is an immensely busy location on weekdays.
The welded gratings on the angled roof construction, first galvanised and then given a high-quality powder coating, are used in frames to allow ivy to grow, which in the hot summer months provides shade and a fresh look, while spreading their broad leaves to protect against the rain on more overcast days. The premium-grade, welded grating with round crossbars is welded onto the supporting members at all corner points, giving a durable and stable connection. This is also necessary to accommodate the sturdy branches of the ivy plants winding their way through the mesh. When used to cultivate plants on sections of buildings, grating can become a natural source of shade as the years pass.
Besides the press-welded grating, coloured plexiglass panels were fitted to the roofs over the platforms at the bus station. Catching the light, they bathe the area in a multi-coloured glow and help emphasise the overall welcoming appearance of Europaplatz in Mönchengladbach. Here, the modern touch of variegated plexiglass panelling blends superbly with the natural look of the ivy covering.
