After a construction period of around six months, the new 'Weißseejochbahn' went into operation on the Kaunertal Glacier in December 2021. The construction of the new lift was planned to be extremely sustainable and environmentally friendly, and a specially developed parking system is used, which is an absolute world first. Staco Germany was able to be part of this unique project and supplied over 200m² of pressure welded grating.
Sustainability is the absolute focus of this project. The 'Weißseejochbahn' is equipped with an energy-efficient direct drive. The building shell will be equipped with a PV system in 2022, which can cover around 40 percent of the railway's energy requirements. The rest of the energy comes from hydropower.
It is therefore no wonder that Staco was chosen for the design of the floor areas, since Staco products are also manufactured in a particularly sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
The floor surfaces of the valley and mountain stations of the new 'Weißseejochbahn' were made with galvanized Staco welded gratings. Staco SP gratings are particularly slip-resistant thanks to the twisted crossbars, which offers a huge advantage, since many visitors and skiers walk or drive on the floor surface every day.
In addition, around a third of the cubature at the valley station of the 'Weißseejochbahn' could be saved by using a parking system that is unique in the world. Compared to conventional station buildings, much less space is required. The Kaunertal nature park and glacier region stands for sustainable and natural year-round tourism and was recently awarded the "Best Tourism Villages" sustainability seal.
